State Agency Honors 80th Birthday of Anne Frank with Distinguished Guests

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

ATLANTA (June 9, 2009)— The Georgia Commission on the Holocaust held a kick-off celebration in honor of the 80th birthday of Anne Frank and 50th anniversary of the film, The Diary of Anne Frank, at the Anne Frank in the World exhibit that is located in downtown Decatur. The exhibit, conducted by the Georgia Commission on the Holocaust, is under the auspices of the Anne Frank Center, USA and the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam.   Anne Frank was born June 12, 1929.

The opening commemoration began with a reading from The Diary of Anne Frank by the CEO of DeKalb County Burrell Ellis.   Mr. Ellis addressed the gathering and expressed his pride in DeKalb County hosting the world’s largest Anne Frank exhibit and its increasing number of daily visitors.  Sylvia Wygoda, Executive Director of the Commission, confirmed that DeKalb County is home to a large number of Holocaust survivors.  Additional excerpts from the diary were read by the Honorable Michelle Henson and German Consul General Lutz Görgens.   Chairman of the Commission, Michael Altman, read a proclamation issued by Governor Perdue declaring June 9—June 12 as Anne Frank Commemorative Days in Georgia.   Alexis Scott, daughter of William A. Scott, III who witnessed the liberation of Buchenwald, the same concentration camp visited this past week by President Obama, was also in attendance.  Birthday cakes were provided by the following local DeKalb businesses: Southern Sweets Bakery, Bagel Palace Bakery and Deli, Kroger, Publix, Pastries A Go-Go, and The Cookie Studio.
