2011 Art / Writing & Music Contests
The Georgia Commission on the Holocaust, in cooperation with the Georgia Department of Education, conducts an annual statewide art and writing contest for middle and high school students. The contest, sponsored by Gary P. Alexander Investment Group of Wells Fargo Advisors and Mr. Michael Altman, Ameriprise Financial, encourages students to learn the lessons of the Holocaust and the nature and repercussions of unchecked hate and prejudice taken to their ultimate extremes.
WHAT ARE THE LESSONS OF THE HOLOCAUST
AN ART AN WRITING CONTEST FOR GEORGIA MIDDLE SCHOOL AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

WRITING CONTEST
Students may choose to write a poem, newspaper article, story, play/dialogue research paper or essay to answer the question, What are the lessons of the Holocaust?
· Each entry must be accompanied by a title page, which contains the following information:
Student's name
Home address and telephone number
School address and telephone number
Teacher's name and email address
Grade Level
· Only three entries may be submitted per school, per division(Middle School and High School).
· The entry must represent the independent effort of the student.
· The entry must show evidence of thoughtful research of the topic. A minimum of three
sources
must be cited on a separate page (only one of which can be obtained through the internet)
· The entry may not exceed 1,000 words (Middle School) or 2,000 (High School) and must be
typed
double-spaced on one side of the paper
· The entry will be judged on content, originality, quality of expression and historical
accuracy by a panel of judges
· The entry becomes the property of the Georgia Commission on the Holocaust which reserves
the right to publish it in its entirety with credit to the author
ART CONTEST
Students May choose to create a sculpture, drawing, painting, poster, video or collage to answer the question, What are the lessons of the Holocaust?
· Each entry must be accompanied by a title page, which contains the following
information secured to the back of the artwork.
Student's name
Home address and telephone number
School address and telephone number
Teacher's name and email address
Grade Level
· Only three entries may be submitted per school, per division (Middle School and High
School)
· The entry must represent the independent effort of the student.
· The entry must show evidence of thoughtful research of the topic. A minimum of three
sources must be cited on a separate page (only one of which can be obtained through the
internet).
· The entry shall not exceed the dimensions 24"X24".
· The entry will be judged on creativity , artistic excellence and thematic content by a panel of
judges.
· The entry becomes the property of the Georgia Commission on the Holocaust which reserves
the right to publish and or display it in its entirety with credit to the author.
MUSIC CONTEST
A creative music contest for Middle and High School students of Georgia conducted by The Georgia Commission on the Holocaust in cooperation with The Georgia Department of Education.
2011 Contest Sponsors: Marlene and Abe Besser in Memory of Cantor Issac Goodfriend.
Entries may be vocal (solo or group) or instrumental (one or more instruments). The musical composition should express a response to the question "What are the lessons of the Holocaust?" Vocal entries will be judged on historical accuracy. Both instrumental and vocal will be judged on creativity and the relation of musical expression to the thematic content.
Entries must contain a title page with the following:
Students name, address, telephone number and grade level.
Schools name , address and telephone number.
Teacher's name and email address.
Entries must be written on music manuscript paper (maximum 3 pages) with an appropriate title.
Music for multiple instruments can be written either as a score with each instrument part identified or as separate pages for each instrument.
Entries must be submitted on a CD and mailed.
Only three entries may be submitted from each school, per division, per contest.
**No Fourth Place winner in this division.

MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS-
DIVISION I, GRADES 6-8
DIVISION II, GRADES 9-12

DEADLINE
Must be postmarked by April 1, 2011
First, Second, Third, Fourth and Director's Choice students and their teachers will be presented and recognized at the GEORGIA STATE CAPITOL as part of the State of GEORGIA DAYS OF REMEMBERANCE OBSERVANCE on April 29, 2011, 10:00 a.m.
