2016 Requirements and Guidelines

Before creating your entry, please carefully review the requirements and guidelines listed below. Failure to adhere to all requirements and guidelines will result in your entry being disqualified. 

Requirements for All Entries

Entries that do not meet ALL of these requirements will be automatically disqualified.

1. All entries must be accompanied by a Contest Submission Form. All entries must be submitted online on this page with the exception of non-digital Visual Art entries which must be mailed or dropped of with a completed submission form. (Visual Art Entries will submit this form online and include a printed copy with the entry. Once the submission form has been submitted online, you will receive an automated e-mail with a PDF to print and send with the entry.)

2. All entries must reflect the contest theme "Mothers and Fathers: Stories of Love and Loss." For research on this topic, students must limit their resources to the ones found on this page.

3. All entries must be original and represent the independent effort of the student.

4. All entries must be submitted to the Georgia Commission on the Holocaust no later than March 23, 2016. All entries received after or postmarked on that date will be late. All late entries are automatically disqualified.

5. All entries must be based on research limited to the resources provided on this page. Works Cited that include resources not listed on this page will be disqualified. All entries must be accompanied by a Works Cited page with a minimum of three total sources. The Works Cited page must be submitted as an attachment to the online submission form. The Works Cited must be formatted according to the following:

a. Page header, center alignment (Ctrl + E): students initials, entry title, and the year 2016. (Example: JS "Mothers and Fathers" 2016)

b. Page footer, right alignment (Ctrl + R): corresponding page number of total pages. (Example: page 2 of 4)

6. All entries must be approved by a teacher or parent.

Visual Art - Writing Music Digital Art - Performance Art

Guidelines for Visual Art Submissions

In addition to the guidelines below, all visual art submissions must adhere to the requirements listed on the top of this page. 

1. Students may choose to create a sculpture, drawing, painting, or collage.

2. Students entering a visual art piece must submit their work with a printed copy of the online submission form and Works Cited via post or drop off to:

3. The Works Cited page must be submitted as an attachment to the online submission form. 4. Each piece must be permanently labeled on the bottom, back, or out of view with the student’s initials and the year 2016. (ie: permanent marker, carved, etc. All entries are judged blindly and permanent artwork identification is necessary for administrative purposes.) Do not put the students' full name directly on the entry.

5. For purpose of safety, do not submit entries with sharp edges or points. Entries with barbed wire are strictly prohibited. Entries that fail to adhere to this guideline will be altered prior to judging or disqualified at the discretion of Georgia Commission on the Holocaust staff.

6. Refrain from using media that will smudge or be altered by handling. If necessary, apply proper fixatives

7. Use of graphic images, swastikas, and images of Hitler must be parent or teacher approved.

Guidelines for Writing Submissions

In addition to the guidelines below, all writing submissions must adhere to the requirements listed on the top of this page. ​

1. Students may choose to create a poem, play, essay, research paper, or short story. 

2. Students entering a writing piece must submit online via the online submission form as a .doc or .docx file.

a. The filename of the entry must be the student’s initials, entry title, and the year 2016. (Example: JS “Mothers and Fathers”  2016)

3. The Works Cited page must be submitted as an attachment to the online submission form. It must include at least three sources. The entry must be based on research limited to the resources provided on this page. If your Works Cited includes resources that are not listed on this page, it will be disqualified.  The Works Cited page must be submitted as an attachment to the online submission form. The Works Cited must be formatted according to the following:

a. Page header, center alignment (Ctrl + E): students initials, entry title, and the year 2016. (Example: JS "Mothers and Fathers" 2016)

b. Page footer, right alignment (Ctrl + R): corresponding page number of total pages. (Example: page 2 of 4)

4. The entire entry must be typed in Time New Roman font, size 12. Pages must be 1.5 spaced. 

 

5. Each page of the entire entry (including the Works Cited) must have a header and a footer formatted according to the following:

a. Page header, center alignment (Ctrl + E): students initials, entry title, and the year 2016. 

b. Page footer, right alignment (Ctrl + R): corresponding page number of total pages. (Example: page 2 of 4)

6. Do not submit a title page.

7. Please do not submit entries with a word count totaling more than 2,000.

Guidelines for Music Submissions

In addition to the guidelines below, all music submissions must adhere to the requirements listed on the top of this page. ​

1. Students may choose to create a vocal or instrumental piece as a solo or group. 

2. Students entering a music piece must submit online via the online submission form as a .mp3 or .wav.

3. The entire entry must be submitted in four components:

a. Submission form: Each group member must complete his/her own submission form.

b. Audio Track: The music track file must be attached to the online submission form. The file name must be the student’s initials, song title, and the year 2016. (Example: JS “Mothers and Fathers” 2016)

c. Sheet music/lyrics:  The sheet must and lyrics (if applicable) must be attached to the online submission form. The header of each page must have the student’s initials, song title, year 2016. The footer of each page must have the corresponding page number of the total pages. (Example: page 2 of 4)

i. Sheet music must be written on music manuscript paper. 

ii. Vocal compositions must be accompanied by lyrics printed in Times New Roman font, size 12. All lyric pages must be 1.5 spaced. 

d. The Works Cited page must be submitted as an attachment to the online submission form. It must include at least three sources. The entry must be based on research limited to the resources provided on this page. If your Works Cited includes resources that are not listed on this page, it will be disqualified.  The Works Cited page must be submitted as an attachment to the online submission form. The Works Cited must be formatted according to the following:

Guidelines for Digital Art Submissions

In addition to the guidelines below, all digital art submissions must adhere to the requirements listed on the top of this page. ​

1. Students may choose to create a video, short documentary, Powerpoint, photo slideshow, or virtual exhibit (using only approved artifacts). 

2. Students entering a digital art piece must submit online via the online submission form as a .mov, .wav, .avi, .ppt, .pptx, .jpg, or .pdf. (If you are submitting more than one file, place in a .zip folder to upload.)

a. The filename of the entry must be the student’s initials, entry title, and the year 2016. (Example: JS “Mothers and Fathers”  2016)

3. The Works Cited page must be submitted as an attachment to the online submission form. It must include at least three sources. The entry must be based on research limited to the resources provided on this page. If your Works Cited includes resources that are not listed on this page, it will be disqualified.  The Works Cited page must be submitted as an attachment to the online submission form. The Works Cited must be formatted according to the following:

4. The source(s) for all video clips and images included in the piece must be credited on the Works Cited page.

5. Use of graphic images, swastikas, and images of Hitler must be parent or teacher approved.

Guidelines for Performance Art Submissions

In addition to the guidelines below, all performance art submissions must adhere to the requirements listed on the top of this page. 

1. Students may choose to create a dance, short film, or play. 

2. Students entering a performance art piece must record their entry and submit online via the online submission form as a .mov, .wav .avi, .doc, .docx, .ppt, .pptx or .pdf. To upload more than one file, place in a .zip folder.

a. The filename of the entry must be the student’s initials, entry title, and the year 2016. (Example: JS “Mothers and Fathers”  2016)

3. The Works Cited page must be submitted as an attachment to the online submission form.
