2018 Requirements and Guidelines

Before creating your entry, carefully review the requirements and guidelines listed below.

Failure to adhere to all requirements and guidelines will result in your entry being disqualified.

Requirements for All Entries

Entries that do not meet ALL of these requirements will be disqualified.

1. Your entry must have a Contest Submission Form.

All entries must be submitted using the online Submission Form.

If you have a non-digital Visual Art entry, you must submit the online Submission Form and include a printed copy with your entry when you mail it or drop it off. Here's how you can print your Submission Form after you've completed it online:

  • After you complete the Submission Form online, you will receive an automatic e-mail with a PDF of your Submission Form.
  • Print this PDF and include it with your entry when you mail it or drop it off to:

2. Your entry must reflect the contest theme "Incite, Resist, Document: Weighing the Power of Words."

If your entry does not reflect this theme, it will be disqualified. 

3. Your entry must be original and reflect your independent effort.

If your entry has been submitted to the Student Contest before, it will be disqualified.

Do not send an entry that includes music, artwork, or writing created by someone other than yourself.

4. Your entry must arrive no later than March 6, 2018.

Any entry received after or postmarked on the deadline, will be disqualified. The Submission Form closes at 4pm on March 6, 2018.

5. Your research may ONLY include the sources listed on the Approved Sources page.

You must use at least three total sources.

When conducting research for your entry, you may ONLY use the Approved Sources. Do not use sources that are not listed on this page.

All entries are scored on historical accuracy, so any entry that is not historically accurate will loose points during judging. 

6. Your entry must include a properly structured amd formatted Works Cited.

When you send your entry, you must attach a Works Cited to your Submission Form.

Your Works Cited must have at least three total sources. Entries with less than three sources will be disqualified.

Works Cited that include sources not listed on this page will be disqualified. 

Your Works Cited must be formatted according to the following:

a. Page header:  center alignment (Ctrl + E)

student's initials, entry title, and the year 2018. (Example: JS "Title" 2018)

b. Page footer:

right alignment (Ctrl + R): corresponding page number of total pages. (Example: page 2 of 4)

Your Works Cited must be structured according to these instructions: Name of website. "Title." Website Title. URL. Accessed on [date].

c. To cite from the Museum’s Holocaust Encyclopedia, use: 
United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. “Introduction to the Holocaust.” Holocaust Encyclopedia. http://www.ushmm.org/wlc/en/article.php?ModuleId=10005143. Accessed on January 1, 2016.

d. To cite from the Museum's collection, use:

7. Your entry must be approved by a teacher or parent.
