Robert Ratonyi was born in Budapest, Hungary. In November 1940, Hungary joined Nazi Germany in the Axis alliance. In March 1944, German forces occupied Hungary. Life for Robert and his family changed dramatically in October 1944 when the fascist Arrow Cross party orchestrated a coup and took control of the Hungarian government. Robert was just 6 years-old when his parents were taken in a round-up of Jews.
